By completing an internship in an international company, our students have the unique opportunity to apply the intercultural knowledge acquired in class directly in the workplace.

Blockchain is on everyone’s lips ‒ not least because the Crypto Valley stretching from Zug to Zurich is one of the global centres for this technology. But what is the story behind the new «Internet of Value»? What can this technology already do? What are its strengths, weaknesses, risks and areas of potential?

The CAS in Blockchain at the University of Zurich looks at these questions and in doing so addresses the topic at a uniquely wide-ranging level: computer scientists, lawyers, economists and financial specialists from the University of Zurich have joined forces to teach participants the technical basics as well as provide  them with legal tools and economic knowledge about the applications. The Digital Transformation and Sustainability in Banking and Insurance courses prepare you for the two most important trend topics in banking of the future. CAS in Leadership

In Banking and Finance, Risk Management is focused on the identification, the measurement, and the mitigation of different risk types. Several mathematical techniques and concepts from Finance are applied to quantify different types of risk.

This enables Risk Managers to take appropriate measures and mitigate the risks within a financial institution. In order to succeed in the long term, a company has to know the risk types that they are facing and how to manage them actively.

Participants have a graduate degree and several years of working experience. A certain level of mathematical knowledge is very beneficial and helpful for successful completion.

CAS Risk Management for Banking and Finance

# Structure

In the first part, the fundamentals of asset management are taught in a theoretically sound and practical manner. Along the investment process, topics such as portfolio optimization, efficient markets, investment strategies as well as the valuation and selection of stocks and bonds are highlighted. The knowledge acquired is then applied practically in a second part in a web-based simulation, with responsibility for the strategic and tactical investment strategy as well as the business management of a department.

Participants have a university degree and several years of professional experience. Basic knowledge of mathematics, statistics, accounting as well as finance is required, and preparatory courses are offered.

Theoretical fundamentals in asset management combined with a practical application of portfolio management through a simulation.

CAS Investment Management

Just a few years after completing a course of study, the market value of the specialist knowledge acquired has declined sharply as a result of natural forgetting and new knowledge. Regular continuing education
counteracts this and ensures an above-average competitive knowledge portfolio.

The program combines academic teaching and research with practice and at the same time promotes professional, methodological and social skills.

The Urban Management approach combines three levels:

1. Urban Sciences: scientifically grounded understanding of the economic, psychological, sociological, and politological contexts that shape built space.

# Structure

In the course, various methods of business valuation as well as special cases of valuation (e.g. of banks and state-owned enterprises) are considered and current trends in the field of M&A are highlighted. Participants apply what they have learned to concrete M&A cases. Insights into the areas of private equity and venture capital as well as the basics of business taxation round off the course.

In recent years, an international movement called "Placemaking" has been established that systematically examines the success factors of vibrant urban spaces and neighborhoods and shows what can be generalized and transferred to other situations. The Placemaking approach differs from conventional planning and project development approaches in particular through the strong involvement of local actors and an iterative rather than linear understanding of planning (microinterventions, prototyping, observation and learning processes). Winter School in Quantitative Finance

Die Europäische Zentralbank (EZB) hat 2021 Klimarisiken als wesentliche Risikofaktoren in die sogenannte SSM Risk Map aufgenommen. Die Forschenden der Wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Zürich gehen unter anderem der Frage nach, wie sich diese Risiken quantifizieren lassen und welche Massnahmen zur Risikoreduktion ergriffen werden können.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has included climate risks as material risk factors in the so-called SSM Risk Map in 2021. Researchers at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics at the University of Zurich are investigating, among other things, how these risks can be quantified and what measures can be taken to reduce the risks.

According to urban researcher Richard Florida, a fear of mass transit developed among many people during the pandemic, as he recently presented at a panel of the Center for Urban & Real Estate Management at the University of Zurich (CUREM). CUREM and its continuing education programs focus, among other things, on how such and other developments are currently changing the function, perception, and valuation of office real estate.

What this means for contemporary leadership is the subject of various continuing education courses offered by the Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics at the University of Zurich.

Managers in the Swiss healthcare sector have to manage numerous challenges simultaneously, such as coping with rising costs, ensuring high-quality patient care, adapting to new technologies and digitalization, attracting and retaining qualified specialists and coping with regulatory requirements and political changes. They must also respond to rising patient expectations and the increasing complexity of the healthcare system. We discuss how to deal with these and similar issues in the CAS Medical Leadership course.

The CAS in FinTech offers a "deep dive" into the most current topics around the technological changes in the finance and insurance industry.

Wichtig scheint im Umgang mit Hype-Technologien, nicht einfach nach neuen Anwendungen zu suchen. Vielmehr sollte umgekehrt gefragt werden, ob uns die Blockchain nicht helfen kann, ein definiertes Problem zu lösen. When dealing with hype technologies, it seems important not to simply look for new applications. Rather, we should ask whether blockchain can help us solve a defined problem. That is why the Blockchain Center at the University of Zurich focuses on communicating the specific characteristics of this technology in continuing education as well. The new Center for Crisis Competence at the University of Zurich brings together the latest research results from various disciplines and makes them available to companies.

Such structured products combine bonds with derivatives and allow the client to map their personal market expectations. The CAS in Derivatives provides a basic understanding of the various types of derivatives, before focusing on not only the construction and valuation, but also the critical reflection of structured products.

Smart-Beta verspricht das Beste aus den beiden Welten aktive und passive Anlagestrategien. So versprechen Smart-Beta Anlagestrategien beispielsweise durch Faktor-basiertes Investieren, Alpha zu erwirtschaften und gleichzeitig günstiger wie aktive Anlagefonds zu sein. Im CAS Investment Management werden unterschiedliche Anlagestile wissenschaftlich fundiert auf ihre Tauglichkeit in der Praxis hin analysiert.

Smart beta promises the best of both worlds of active and passive investment strategies. For example, smart beta investment strategies promise to generate alpha through factor-investing, and at the same time, are cheaper than active investment funds. In the CAS in Investment Management, different investment styles are analysed in a scientifically sound manner for their suitability in practice.

Finanzinstitute sind diversen finanziellen Risiken wie Zahlungsausfälle von Schuldnern oder sich veränderten Zinsen und nicht finanziellen Risiken wie operationelle Risiken ausgesetzt. Das Risikomanagement von Finanzinstituten befasst sich mit der Identifikation und der Messung sowie der Überwachung aller Risiken, die den Fortbestand des Unternehmens gefährden könnten. Der CAS Risk Management for Banking and Finance rüstet Entscheidungstragende mit den hierfür notwendigen Kenntnissen aus.

Financial institutions are exposed to various financial risks, such as defaults by debtors or changing interest rates, and non-financial risks, such as operational risks. The risk management of financial institutions deals with the identification and measurement, as well as the monitoring, of all risks that could endanger the continued existence of the company. The CAS Risk Management for Banking and Finance equips decision-makers with the knowledge necessary to assess these risks.
